  Linux on Tablets?
Posted by: brew - 05-19-2024, 09:44 AM - Forum: User Projects - Replies (2)

At May's CC-LUG meeting yesterday (18 May), Patrick brought up alternatives to Android on phones and tablets.  We discussed Lineage OS, and possibly one or  two others.

I purchased a Samsung Tab A 8.4 from ComputerCorps to use as a pdf reader and potentially for presentations.  I bought a "dock" with it, and can not get the HDMI to drive a screen.  The USB ports work and I can move files easily.  After many attempts, I have a semi-functional pdf reader  (Foxit), so at least a part of the tablet's mission is accomplished.

The tablet has a bunch of junk apps installed, Bixby and AT&T TV among the most annoying.  Yes, they can be disabled, but not removed.  I also hate the AT&T start screen with its hideous music (using that word loosely).

Looking at the Lineage OS site today, this tablet appears to be supported, and I took the first steps to replace Android with Lineage today--enabled developer mode and USB debugging on the tablet.

In the next few days, I'll put adb and fastboot on my laptop (Ubuntu 22.04) and attempt to open a channel between the laptop and the tablet.

Assuming that all works, I'll follow the instructions to get Lineage OS on the tablet.  Of course, I will update this thread with updates and roadblocks, and hopefully bring the tablet with Lineage installed to June's meeting.

FYI, I am following the instructions for the Tab A at:  https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/gtowifi/

  Marine Nav program OpenCPN
Posted by: Woodtec - 05-14-2024, 08:43 AM - Forum: User Projects - Replies (5)

With NOAA discontinuing RASTOR charts and converting to VECTOR charts I am converting to OpenCPN navigation software.  There is a add-on package to perform SAR search patterns but I am having difficulty installing it.  Hope to find someone who can help.  Roger Haynes

Trying linux on windows with ventoy
Posted by: tonyg_s - 05-05-2024, 08:00 PM - Forum: User Projects - Replies (7)

Hi All,

This question is about Ventoy, and the reason I put it under "User Projects" is because it seems to be a project for me to just get started. If it should go in another forum, let me know and I'll repost.

My question is really basic. When I look at the page, not seeing the proper path. It's a me thing because it's been so long since I've played with stuff.

Anyway, I have a laptop running Win7 and I want to test some Linux distros to see how they work. Do I want the linux download or the windows download? I'm confused because they talk about testing windows distros as well, which is not what I want to do. Hoping to have at least one computer on linux by the time summer arrives.

And I'm going to be gone a lot this week, so, no reply means I haven't had time to test, not I'm ignoring anyone.

Thanks in advance.

Tony

  Using this Discussion Board...
Posted by: brew - 05-01-2024, 01:59 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

seems to be really easy, and a few more features than expected.

For example, we have a calendar function, and I added the May meeting to it.

And, we have a private messaging function that seems way too easy to use.

Thanks again to Glenn for finding, installing, and running this Board for our Linux User Group!

  Screen rotation followup
Posted by: cheetah2003 - 05-01-2024, 12:56 PM - Forum: Hardware Support - Replies (3)

So as I mentioned some months ago with my Dell Latitude 7390 2-in-1 having issues with screen rotation not rotating the touchscreen orientation, I have resolved this issue.

I upgraded my Dell to Debian 12 today and that just...fixed it.  So all good.

Cheers!

  Ubuntu 24.04
Posted by: brew - 04-27-2024, 09:24 AM - Forum: Distro Discussion - Replies (6)

Canonical released Ubuntu 24.04 Noble Numbat, on Thursday (25 April 2024).  This is the first release in the series, so proceed with caution.  However, if you have been using the more experimental and incremental releases, 23.04, for example, you'll experience minor changes, all to the good.

If like me, you are moving up from 22.04, the new version brings the 6.8 kernel, lowers the latency in system tasks, and a simplified (and faster) installation process.

So, yesterday, I took my really old Stinkpad (2009? Lenovo T400, Intel 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, 250GB SATA drive) out of a dusty drawer and did the install using a USB stick.  First problem--the battery is completely dead, but it does run using the AC adapter.  The install started within two minutes, but hung when I selected the WiFi access.  OK, I have a spare Ethernet port on my router, so I restarted the install, and it flew into the first real choice.  The Default installation is just the essentials--kernel, browser, basic utilities -or- you can choose the Extended, which includes LibreOffice, Thunderbird, and the other apps you would expect to see on a desktop.

I chose Extended, and the installation completed without errors in about 25 minutes (not bad for 15 year old hardware, eh?).  After a reboot, a very plain Ubuntu desktop opened.  Note that one of the heralded features, AppCenter, fails to run, and the web recommended fix is to remove and replace it, sigh.
Did that, but I had to use Apt to install VLC (and make all the usual fixes to get it to run).  After all that, a DVD ran correctly.

Next step is to try out a variety of desktops--I'm used to Mate, but tried KDE Plasma for a while, and some in the group having me thinking about trying Cinnamon.

This is not my "production" laptop, so I am mainly using this as a testing exercise.  I will be trying to break it--no risk, so why not?
I'll report back if I see anything worth mentioning.  Let me know if anybody else is interested in this effort, or wants me to test something.

As far as my production laptop goes, I will wait for 24.04.1, due in June, and use the automated upgrade option instead of a scratch installation (which I did with the Stinkpad).  Of course, I'll back up my data before starting the upgrade, and I can always do a scratch install as a fallback.

  Sound only works in headphones
Posted by: glenn - 04-27-2024, 03:36 AM - Forum: Hardware Support - Replies (8)

I wish they would get my sound chip driver finished in the kernel.  Headphones only is a pain in the butt.  I'm running the kernel from unstable instead of testing, hoping for sound support.  I have had less than stellar results running the kernel from the experimental branch.  Once it corrupted my SSD forcing an install and restore to get my system back to normal.

My audio equipment is as follows.

  Thoughts on systemd?

Just something that came to my mind as a good question for discussion to get this forum going. Systemd is a hot topic and I’m curious what’s everyone’s thoughts are on it and what PID 1 should be.

  Debian Rules

Debian (the testing branch) rules, it's fairly current and stable as a rock.  No breakage in over a year now.
