Linux- Music CD Playback Ripping etc
Posted by: Ed Carson - 05-17-2025, 07:19 PM - Forum: User Projects - Replies (1)

I am curious as to how many people are into this hobby of collecting/archiving/storing/streaming and playing back and using our old music collections in lieu of using a streaming service etc.
I grew up in an era where it was common to have an 8-track, record (lp), record 12" single,  cassette, CD,  and minidisc.  Now  we can have access to our own music 24/7, without the use of a continuing paid streaming service.

I started this endeavor many years ago when I was able to convert my music into an MP3 format and store it on a hard drive when it became less cost prohibitive. Fast forward to the present, and long story short , we now have access to perfect copies of our music and technology now allows us to create our own music streaming server using linux (and windows too).  If anybody is interested, I can go through the hoops on how to do this on linux. I now use a lossless format and have spent many hours re-ripping all my media. But I now have access to all my music without subscribing to spotify etc. I also can use a USB stick or USB hardrive to listen to my music in the car.

For those who can't wait for the how-to:

Asunder (for the cd-ripping)

MusicBrainz Picard for the file renaming/artwork/and metadata information

Sound Converter for switching back and forth from the lossless format to MP3's (if necessary)

optional Lyrion Music Server

optional Lyrion Music Hardware compatible playback devices

Optional Plex media server

optional Plexamp on your phone and devices

All the optional services above have a number of alternatives too.

Although maybe dated.  What is the version that is being installed by Computer Corp?

Cinnamon
Xfce?
or Mate?

I am under the assumption it would probably be Cinnamon.

  Plucky Puffin (Ubuntu 25.04)
Posted by: brew - 04-18-2025, 04:29 PM - Forum: Distro Discussion - Replies (1)

Not usually a fan of interim releases, and Plucky Puffin may be the worst Ubuntu distro release name yet, BUT...it does include the "latest" kernel, 6.14; a new Gnome release, 48; a simplified installer, which might be a plus for new Linux users; and claims to have enhanced networking and management improvements.

I may install it to check out something called a a Wellbeing Panel, that purports to monitor screen time and usage habits.
Seems like it might be handy for kids, and us geezers that tend to fall asleep at the keyboard :-)

Since I only mentioned things that caught my eye, and somebody else may notice something I missed, the full announcement is here:

I will report back if I find anything worth mentioning.

  Enduring Dell Systems for Developers
Posted by: Paulie - 03-15-2025, 04:59 PM - Forum: User Projects - Replies (6)

Dell has seemingly abandoned their "Developer Edition" with (support for) Ubuntu.
A few years back, they had an initiative going, but it has dwindled out.

Others may be slowly moving in to fill this void...   ...please see the link below.

Indeed, our Linux User Group has "Newbies."
But marketing to developers may help Computer Corps.

Just a thought.
