The previous engagement at Computer Corps which was reserving the space for July 20th has been moved to a different date.
Carson City LUG will now be at the usual place (Computer Corps Outlet Store on Highway 50) this coming Saturday, July 20th, at 1pm. Please arrive a few minutes before 1pm as the doors are locked at 1pm.
Those arriving at noon are welcomed to a free lunch served to all Computer Corps volunteers.
background:
I've got several 2011,2012 iMac computers which work perfectly well, that were graciously obsoleted by the "Great Big Company"...
and have SOME fan control in the loigic board EFI, but with the directive of the CEO at the time: "never bother the customer with
anything important unless you absolutely have to!"
lets the machines get JUST A BIT TOASTY!
So, with Linux, I can Still USE these Nice Computers Thankfully!
Here's the thing:
I've scoured the forums and found lm_sensors and hw_mon (some files included below),
but there's no clear instructions (I've yet found) indicating HOW to design a temp/fan curve in a file,
and attach that to a sensor:fan "pair"
ie-
profile-cpu_die_tempfan.txt
coretemp-isa-0000:core0 -- applesmc-isa-030:CPU
temp00, rmp ; 30C, 940rmp
temp01, rmp ; 35C, 1040rmp
.
.
temp99,rmp ; 67C, 2100rmp
At least this is how I think it should look somewhere?!
It looks like the: lm_sensorservice; enabled in Status_LmSensorsServiceInquiry BUT
lm_sensors.service: Referenced but unset environment variable evaluates to an empty string:
isn't configured...
sudo sensors-detect
/etc/conf.d/lm_sensors
If one does an ls in: /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/device
one gets a whole bunch of stuff that looks very promising, but
no instructions on how to use the plethora of files.
fan1_input maaaybe gets coretemp-isa-0000:core0
fan1_output maybe gets applesmc-isa-030:CPU
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 4096 Jul 11 12:38 temp1_input
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 4096 Jul 11 12:38 temp1_label
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 4096 Jul 11 12:38 temp20_input
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 4096 Jul 11 12:38 temp20_label
Where is the documentation?
What did I miss?
Thanks for your time looking at this, taking the TIME looking into this, and well, any useful
help/recommendations might have, from something you got to work.
Apparently found this sometime ago, but, yet again, the other day: https://linux.die.net/man/5/sensors.conf
.... and looks pretty good, but sure would be nice to have some EXAMPLE files that WORK?!
Am struggling a bit with this... but, every time I look at it, a little more kinda sinks in.
With Computer Corps hosting the National Guard on July 20 we need to make other arrangements for the LUG meeting. There are several options. Move it to a different Saturday, or after lunch at Computer Corps move the meeting to the CC NOC at 4681 Morgan Mill Rd. I'd like to get something set up so I can post it to the LUG website. Please help me out and let's get something resolved. My vote is to hold it a the CC Noc.
Hey, folks, sorry about the late notice, but I just learned that SDF, a free Unix open-access site that's available to anyone over the internet, is running their summer 2024 Plan 9 virtual bootcamp starting tomorrow, June 20th: http://sdf.org/plan9/
Plan 9 is kinda-sorta like "UNIX 2.0," in that the people responsible for creating the original UNIX operating system in the very late 60s and early 70s, decided to create a new, streamlined system that incorporated everything they had learned, as well as making networking and graphical interfaces a primary part of the system. SDF is running 9front, the most active branch or agglomeration of Plan 9 enthusiasts. More about 9front.
If you're not ready to dive in and you just want to get a taste of how Plan 9 works and what it looks like, surf over to https://copy.sh/v86/ and select "9front" from the list (you can also play with other operating systems).
Anyone ever attended a Debian (or any distro really) conference? This years DebConf is in Korea so probably a bit far and I don't think they have ever had US one but Canada/Mexico would be doable for me if it ever was there again like it was a few years ago. I often see miniDebConf postings with one recently in Brazil too.
