Enduring Dell Systems for Developers - Paulie - 03-15-2025

Dell has seemingly abandoned their "Developer Edition" with (support for) Ubuntu.
A few years back, they had an initiative going, but it has dwindled out.

Others may be slowly moving in to fill this void...   ...please see the link below.

Indeed, our Linux User Group has "Newbies."
But marketing to developers may help Computer Corps.

Just a thought.

RE: Enduring Dell Systems for Developers - Steve - 03-16-2025

When I looked up Dell laptops they listed 16 models that supposedly were optionally available with Ubuntu.  However, I was only able to confirm that a couple of Latitudes and a few rather pricey Precision Workstations could actually be customized with Ubuntu. Sad I'm sure it must be a demand thing and we can only hope that it will get more popular as an option with changes to Windows over time.  Good thought on the developer angle, though.

Kinda on topic...

The machine spec'd on the handout at the meeting will cost?

Thanks
Mike

I don't know if they match the specs on the handout, but IIRC the ones out on the shelf started at $95 for a basic desktop and were $230-$280 for a nice laptop.  Perhaps @cheetah2003 could chime in with better info.

RE: NEW TO LINUX? HAVE QUESTIONS? SUGGESTED READING - Paulie - 04-14-2025

In addition to the advantages of being a User,
a knowledge of Linux can help as a Developer.

Said another way, if your exposure (as a Developer)
is ONLY within Windows development environment,
then you may be perceived as having a limited perspective.

This is because many production shops are run atop Linux.

'just some thoughts!

(My link above went stale...  ...sorry.)

Again, thinking and...
...in an attempt to help Computer Corps,
perhaps we could market a Developer Edition.

Dell has certainly left a void.
The number of developers continues to grow.
AI hogs resources, but many now are interested.

(My 1st automobile was "used," wasn't your's?)  Wink

I've been told...  ...CC may have an inventory of the Dell Optiplex.
Certified by Canonical, some versions of Optiplex fully check out with Ubuntu.

If Ron "procured" a standard set and
we loaded 'em with Ubuntu, we could add:

Git,
Python and/or Ruby
Editor: Sublime, VIM or ?
Debugger
DBMS
Statistics...
...and/or other software for a prospective developer to play with.

On EBAY, try searching "Ubuntu optiplex" and you'll find few vendors.
And few of Canonical's certified Dell's can be found.
Currently, few "Dell Developer Edition" systems are available.

In sum, if Ron found any "certified" systems, let's load/sell 'em.

Again, just trying to help.
